A New Chapter

A lot has happened since my trip to Spain.  When I returned, I interviewed for the position at Paperless Post and was offered the job.  I started working on October 24.  Laura traveled to France and London and then to New York, where she stayed with me in November and December.  She left for Mexico City where she too started working, in public relations.

I love my job.  I manage the company’s partnerships and business development, as well as coordinate the PR and Marketing effort.  I’ve been given the opportunity to wear many hats and it’s been really fun.  I look forward to coming to work every day, which is a new and rewarding experience for me.

That’s not to say I’ve got it all figured out just yet.  But within the course of a year, I’ve just made some serious progress.  Exactly one year ago, I was in New York after my road trip to Florida, preparing to take off for Colombia.  I never could have predicted how things would unravel.  It’s amazing to think that if I had never gone to Casa Tua in Miami over New Years and met Nacho, I wouldn’t have been introduced to Lolo, who showed me the way in Colombia.  Then I never would have gone to Jonathan’s high school reunion in Bogota and met Max who told me that I must meet his Argentinian brother, Kike Passo, when I traveled to Buenos Aires.  Without Kike, Laura and I may have lived our lives and never crossed paths.  Now she is my sister and I can’t imagine life without her.   The friends I made along the way have taught me so much.

I will never forget Nacho’s philosophy.

“If the colors of the rainbow are painted on a yoyo, when you spin it fast enough, it becomes white.  We are those colors.  At one point, we were all white, together.  But in the same way that a white light entering a prism splits into different colors, we were separated into our separate colors too.  We each have a unique color.  For each of us, there are two or maybe three people in this world to which we must bind.  One of these people is the man or woman we fall in love with and chose to spend our life with.   If each person represents one, a couple in love together has the potential to equal one million.  We must find the person who makes us reach a potential we could not find on our own.  Then there are other people in your life, your friends and family, who complete your connection. Until we all make those connections, we will not be whole.  Once we do, we will be white, the sum of all of the colors, and with God.”

Nacho told me, “You have good energy and so you attract good energy.”   Its so important to have a positive outlook.  Recently, over the past few months, I lost that energy.  I lost myself.  I stopped writing.  Now I’ve found it again.  I hope to maintain it because being with the right people is what makes life fulfilling.

Every day we change and grow.  It took me 284 days to find the right job.  Every day along the way I got a little closer, but the job wasn’t the end goal.  There is no end goal.  I will continue to learn about the world and where I fit in it.  We change as we experience new things.  What’s important is that we are always out there, forcing ourselves to grow and figure out what makes us truly happy.   Life is too short to get stuck, in the wrong job or with the wrong person.

Looking back on the past year there are a number things I’ve learned on my journey.  They may seem obvious but sometimes I need to remind myself:

  1. Never settle.
  2. Do what makes you happy.
  3. Don’t dwell on the things you can’t change.
  4. Don’t wait for things to fall into place.  Make it happen.  Don’t expect anyone to do it for you.
  5. Travel and experience new things.
  6. Talk to people.  You never know who you’ll meet and how they might change the course of your life.
  7. Surround yourself with people who love you and bring out the best in you.
  8. Love yourself and never forget who you are, for anyone or anything.

I’ve slowed down but I haven’t stopped.  There will always be new adventures on the horizon.  Last week Laura and I booked a trip to Miami in March and I will see her again for Coachella in California in April.  This story continues…
