Day 132: I Am Staying in NYC
I haven’t written in some time, but I have had a lot going on. An idea has been evolving and I think I finally found what I am looking for, or at least I have some concrete direction.
I should fill you in, if I haven’t already in person. I threw a party two weeks ago. I love to host. I love to bring people together and orchestrate a room. I love to stir the pot and watch everyone have a good time. Since I was a little girl, I have loved creating an environment that people want to be in. I love to see happy people having fun.
It never occurred to me that this passion could progress into a potential career. But recently, a light bulb went on and I began to form a vision, which would allow me to work for myself and do what I love. The vision is to build my own venue. I am not ready to do that just yet, but I am taking the first step in that direction.
After my party on Saturday, my friend Yaw and I discuss throwing a party on my roof, just for fun. I speak to my super and learn that it would cost $500 to have over eight people up there and noise would be an issue. Ok, so I can’t do it here, but we should still have a party. Let’s find the space. I talk to Jay, who is opening the restaurant at the Pod Hotel in midtown. He manages the Pod Café. They have a great garden. Perfect. We negotiate with management to take home a piece of the revenues and we use Yaw’s company, Silverlake to Soho, to promote the event.
The weather isn’t perfect, but we still manage to get a good turnout and have some great guest performances by Missy Modell, Dean and Ravo, the Kinetics and One Love.
A seed has been planted. I hope it can grow into something much bigger. I am roped into Yaw’s company, Silverlake to Soho (www.silverlaketosoho.com). I have a new direction. A platform for a vision that I can work towards. It will start this summer.
The company promotes emerging artists through various channels, including events, concerts, film, media and online. I am staying in New York to see what happens this summer. I’ve been working on organizing events and getting involved in other aspects of the business. It is a great team of people and I am very excited.
To be continued…
